How Two Melissas was Born

Limited seating capacity caused by the ongoing pandemic meant there was no room for me at my favourite coffee shop On Friday, September 11, 2020, so I went to the Red Beard on Tranquille Road in Kamloops, BC, Canada, for my daily coffee break. The Red Beard had friendly staff, including servers Landon and Melissa.

While chatting about music with Melissa, I was talking about a Recording I was working on with a title inspired by my Landlady, Catey. Melissa said: "No one has written a song with my name."

"Well, then I'll have to," I answered.

Melissa responded: "Oh, then you will get two with one, because we have two Melissas here!"

Two Melissas. The song was born right there. A short time later, when Melissa returned to check on my coffee, I had the full melody for the song and the lyrics for the Chorus already finished. I sang the chorus to Melissa, who then sang along with me, then kept singing it a few times after that. She told me on a later visit that it was so catchy, her husband wandered around the house singing it for the next couple of days. She also reported that it was sung around the campfires after that with everyone making up their own lyrics.

I wanted the right lyrics for the rest of this song, and was waiting for the right time to record and release it. Although originally meant to be about the Red Beard in Kamloops, the style of the song required more of a Dance Club atmosphere. Not wanting to be misleading about the Red Beard, I reluctantly decided to change the location in the song to one with a Dance Floor and Live Band. I didn't want it to be a competitor of the Red Beard, though, so I chose a place from my memory that was about 1000 miles away, a place called "Foxies".

And, if you are ever in Kamloops, you can drop in at the Red Beard on Tranquille Drive, where you will find the Two Melissas who inspired the song.
